W11 - research 3 / field observation

posted Mar 21, 2010 8:28 AM by Douglas Seidler

In previous projects you researched various material properties and methods of construction. You have also analyzed construction details and design concepts.  In this project you will analyze an additional series of details.  This time you will complete your research by visiting and observing a door/entry threshold at the mall.
Keep the following questions in mind as you work through this project:
  • What is the relationship between the properties of a material and the way it is used to influence interior space?
  • What is the relationship between the detail and store’s design concept?  Did the choice of material strengthen this relationship?
  • What are the similarities and differences between sketching details (by hand) and drawing details using SketchUp?
  • What do you learn from visiting a building/site that you did not learn from your previous detail case study?

Using Revit as a modeling and documentation tool, draw our classroom. In addition to documenting existing conditions, your project should demonstrate your ability to effectively communicate interior space.
  • Floor Plan – including overall dimensions, furniture, drawing symbols, and wall poché
  • Reflected Ceiling Plan – including ceiling condition, light fixtures, and wall poché
  • Four (4) Interior Elevations or two (2) Section/Elevations
  • Three (3) Interior Perspectives

research 2: detail case study

posted Jan 19, 2010 9:04 AM by Douglas Seidler

In the previous project we looked at various materials and identified properties and methods of construction for each material. In this project we will investigate / analyze several details specifically looking at the relationship between material and concept.  Keep the following questions in mind as you work through this project:
  • What is the relationship between the properties of a material and the ways it can be used to create and shape interior space?
  • What is the relationship between the detail and design concept? Did the choice of material strengthen this relationship?
  • What can we learn from drawing details that you do not learn from your detail research?
